Winchester is a high-end country club community located in the Sierra foothills near the small town of Meadow Vista, five miles up I-80 from Auburn, California. It is away from the congestion and crowds of the Bay Area, yet near to excellent medical care, shopping, restaurants, parks and activities of the greater Sacramento area. It was conceived and constructed in the early 2000s by CC Meyers the well-known highway and bridge builder. It contains an 18-hole private membership golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., and Sr., a beautiful 35,000 square foot clubhouse which offers lunch and dinner service, (www.winchestercountryclub.com). The Country Club includes a state-of-the-art fitness center with multiple classes.
Winchester residents consider it a “Gem” in the Sierra given its special status and rarity. It is often described as the perfect location—above the Central Valley fog but below the snow.
Winchester also has a large Community Center which includes a swimming pool, tennis, pickle ball and bocce courts. The Center hosts frequent events for the community and is a great meeting place for the residents and a place for new residents to meet your neighbors. The Community is very friendly and welcoming to new residents. There are multiple social activities and clubs designed to meet a wide variety of interests.
Winchester has a current total of 337 lots and 230 custom homes have been constructed. Most lots have been sold and developed but a few are still available.
Homes are generally large and range from 3,000 to 8,000 square feet. The entire Community is patrolled by security service 24 hours a day seven days a week.
Consistent with Meyer’s background and experience Winchester is one of the finest and well engineered communities in Northern California. Unlike many developments in the Sierra, the roads are wide, there are 110 fire hydrants for the 337 lots, there is municipal water–not wells, there is a sewer system, natural gas–not propane, and the electric service is underground improving reliability. Winchester has also been certified a Firewise Community by the National Fire Protection Association. The Community is fortunate to be part of the Placer Hills Fire Protection District and has a fire station only one mile away. The Community also includes hiking paths and equestrian trails.
The residents of Winchester are a mix of young professionals and retired or almost retired residents. Many owners previously lived in the Bay Area and Southern California and were C level officers in their respective Companies or firms.
Residents enjoy all the amenities of Winchester as well as its location—around an hour to Truckee/Tahoe, two hours to the Bay Area and a half hour to all the activities in the Sacramento area. Ski areas like Sugar Bowl, Squaw Valley and Northstar are also about an hour away.
